The history of the Waveney House Hotel: Staithe Restaurant The restaurant's name derives from Deny's Staithe, the original name for the historic Waveney House. 'Staithe' is an old Viking word meaning landing stage, and relates to jetties or wharfs from where coal would be loaded on to ships along the River Waveney.
In around 960, the waters of a wide estuary extended inland from Great Yarmouth and covered the marshes of the Waveney Valley enabling large ships to navigate the waters via Deny's Staithe.
The beautiful Waveney Valley, as we know it today, was formed by the movement of sandbanks off the Norfolk and Suffolk coast which caused the mouth of the estuary to become obstructed and the extent of the Waveney Valley marshland gradually increased. Currently you can navigate small broads craft and moor (by appointment) at the Waveney House Hotel and follow the River Waveney inland as far as Geldeston Locks.
